Top-rated 95 Points, QWine Reviews - “I could sit on a glass of this all night and be satisfied. Damn it’s good. Sourced from a 135 year old vineyard, the wine sees time in puncheons. Take a whiff and eucalypt aromas hit me straight up. Add to that purple flowers, violets, and kirsch. Filling the mouth beautifully, it sits pretty carrying a medium body profile. Smooth feels, I just want to kick back in a big comfy chair with it. Tim Smith admits Mataro is a hard sell, but when you have quality wine produced like this from wonderfully aged vines, a standing ovation is more than appropriate. Drink now to ten years.” – Steve Leszczynski

Based on a vineyard we believe to be in the order of around 140 years of age. We do a couple of picks to get a range of ripeness and acidity levels to enable a good base of wines to blend from.

    Description

Vintage condition: Things started well for 2015 with above average early winter rains that filled the soils and dams. August and Spring were drier and had warmer days than average, meaning the vines got away to a good healthy start. Ripening conditions were perfect, and the result in many vineyards was that vintage started early, with many varieties ripening together. Most of the vintage was harvested before the end of March, with only the very late sites and varieties left to pick in April. Yields were a bit below or close to the recent average and certainly better than the last two lighter years. Whites are showing delicate flavours and lovely natural acidity, and reds strong colours and rich flavours.

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Tim Smith Wines

These days, Tim Smith Wines is one of Australia’s most awarded boutique wineries. Tim’s wines have collected medals all over Australia and around the world, and in 2019, he won the coveted Barons of the Barossa Winemaker of the Year award. It was a meaningful one for Tim, who feels deeply connected to the region. Tim’s wines include Barossa superstars Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, as well as Viognier and Riesling from neighbouring Eden Valley. He sources grapes from some of the best vineyards in the Barossa, working closely with the families who tend them. “My approach to making great wine is to get good grape growers, because they do the hard work; they understand that stuff,” says Tim. “And then, in the winery, it’s kind of a hands-off approach. We don’t overwork the wines.
