Fervor 'Nonno Lou' Sagrantino/Nero d'Avola Great Southern 2023
$29.00
Description
The wine displays a gently aromatic profile red plum, dark cherry, cranberry skin, and brown spices. Delicate & restrained on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with an even and balanced feel. Cherry and plum lead, with delicate spice in support and long chalky tannins bringing carry and frame.
The fruit was selectively machine picked in the cool early morning. The fruit was chilled down to 7°, it was then tipped all tipped into an open 5 tonne fermenter to co-ferment together. The wine slowly came up to temperature with it having a 4-day cold soak before primary fermentation started. When the wine was up to temperature, fermentation started spontaneously with natural yeast from the winery. The wine was hand plunged in the beginning then moving to very gentile pump over once a day, once the ferment was at its peak. The wine was pressed off into 2year old barriques and 2-year-old puncheons after being on skins for 14 days. The wine was unfined and unfiltered as the wine was sitting beautifully.
Nonno Lou is named after Callum's grandfather who unfortunately passed away in October of 2023 2 months before this wine was bottled. This was the first of these namesake wines that unfortunately Nonno Luciano was not able to savour and enjoy. But I can say with my heart that he would have loved it. This wine honours his Tuscan background (from Lucca). Or though it is not made with grapes originating from Tuscany it is in a style that Lou loved a beautiful drink. The words on the back "My Nonno Luciano - My Super Tuscan". A lover of big and beautiful Italian Reds, he loved his family, he loved fiercely and he was always there with a wink and a smile ready.
