Timo Mayer Dr. Mayer Pinot Noir Yarra Valley 2024
$65.00
Description
100% whole bunch. A number of critics have rated this amazing Yarra Valley wine extremely highly: the 2023 vintage was given a score of 95 by James Suckling.
95 Points, James Suckling: "This wine is 100% whole bunch fermentation, with 10 days carbonic and 10 days maceration. The simplicity of the approach lies in stark contrast to the complexity of this sumptuous, medium-bodied expression. Briars, dill and cardamon with ample red cherry fruit and lilacs. Woodsy whole bunch-derived tannins across the finish. According to winemaker Timo Mayer, this is always better after at least five years. Drink or hold." (of the 2023)
95 Points, The Wine Front: "This is 100% whole bunch here. Has ten days carbonic, ten days macerated after that. Big perfume of black cherry, green olive, undergrowth, black pepper, rosemary and fennel. Good start. Feels plush yet crunchy, with more dark cherry, lots of black pepper, paprika spice, black olive in brine and clove-woody spice. Fine tannins chime in, a wrap and building to a fine pucker. You can see this having a long and interesting future too. Gorgeous." (of the 2023)
ABOUT TIMO MAYER
German-born, enigmatic winemaker Timo Mayer is one of the great characters of the Yarra Valley. The words bombastic, charismatic and wild are as much applicable to the man as his wines. From his close-planted Yarra Valley vineyard, evocatively named 'Bloody Hill', Timo carves out some astounding wines made with low levels of new oak and minimal additions. The signature of Timo's winemaking style is his penchant for whole-bunch ferment. His wines have an ethereal quality, firm tannins and impeccable structure. These are compelling and extremely limited wines that tell a unique story of the Yarra Valley.
