94pts Gary Walsh, The Wine Front: "Meaty, spicy, floral, blue and black fruits, some liquorice too. It’s medium to full-bodied, spicy juicy dark berries, supple tannin, a little orange peel and aromatic dried herb, and a long savoury finish. Excellent."

Discovering more old vine mataro and grenache in the 'gardens' of Tim Smith’s Barossa growers, provides him the perfect opportunity to craft a blend that is quite aromatic and in the 'Rhone Style' that he loves. Retaining all the plush palate weight is the hallmark of this wine, which is always purposefully mataro dominant. This allows the mataro fruit, which has a similar tannin structure as shiraz, to be ready to drink upon release as well as having some serious cellaring potential.

    What The Critics Say
“Holy terroir Batman! The 2022 twist on a GSM blend from Tim Smith emits distinct freshpotting soil, granite and black cherry skin. Mourvèdre is king here showing its rustic nature in pure black peppercorn, smoked salt and pastrami. It’s glorious in its chastity of fruit, restraint of oak and slinky palate weight. For a winemaker whose fingerprint is on the label you see a lack of winemaker fiddling and more of the site the grapes are grown and savvy timing of picking. Delicious wine and stylish as all hell. Drink with peppercorn studded salami in handfuls.”

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Tim Smith Wines

These days, Tim Smith Wines is one of Australia’s most awarded boutique wineries. Tim’s wines have collected medals all over Australia and around the world, and in 2019, he won the coveted Barons of the Barossa Winemaker of the Year award. It was a meaningful one for Tim, who feels deeply connected to the region. Tim’s wines include Barossa superstars Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, as well as Viognier and Riesling from neighbouring Eden Valley. He sources grapes from some of the best vineyards in the Barossa, working closely with the families who tend them. “My approach to making great wine is to get good grape growers, because they do the hard work; they understand that stuff,” says Tim. “And then, in the winery, it’s kind of a hands-off approach. We don’t overwork the wines.
