Top Value Australian Wines
1. Shiraz: The Bold Classic
-
Recommended Pick: Tim Smith Wines Barossa Shiraz 2022
-
Tasting Notes: Deep crimson. Classical choco-berry aromas with panforte notes. Richly flavoured wine with ample dark chocolate, dark berry fruits, plentiful chocolatey tannins and marzipan/cedarwood/touch bourbon new oak notes. Finishes chocolatey firm with a spike of aniseed. Very likeable punter’s wine, rather than a critic’s choice. Drink now or keep, as the elements might fold and integrate further. A classic & great value Barossa Shiraz. 94+ Points, Andrew Caillard, The Vintage Journal
-
Why It Tastes Expensive: This Shiraz is sourced from 5 vineyards on the ‘floor’ of the Barossa Valley plus 3 in Eden Valley which includes one 110 year old parcel. It was bottled slightly earlier to preserve the primary attributes of the quality fruit. This wine was aged in French and American oak and shows great primary, regional characters of plum, blackberry, anise and cedar oak. The palate is layered and plush, and the fruit tannin dominates the oak tannin. Medium to full bodied, the wine is long and comes to a clean finish with the fruit tannin providing a defined, but not abrupt end.

2. Chardonnay: Crisp and Elegant
-
Recommended Pick: Domaine Naturaliste Artus Chardonnay Margaret River 2022
-
Tasting Notes: Adds another dimension to Dukes' Purus chardonnay. The aim is to capture the rich texture of this variety and express it with a deeply layered complexity, while retaining that keen fresh minerally thread. Savoury butterscotch and crème brulee swirl through an engaging palate defined by a keen acid and a little grapefruit to close. Just a beautiful wine. 97 Points Ray Jordan

96 Points Wine Pilot and Vinous Media
-
95 Points GOLD MEDAL Decanter World Wine Awards 2024
-
Why It Tastes Expensive: Crafted by one of Australia’s most renown winemaker Bruce Dukes. Domaine Naturaliste is now seen as one of the top wineries in Australia. This year has seen Bruce Dukes lift even further as he continues to collect gongs around the world. Artus is an artistic translation of the local Gin Gin clone into wine. The wine creates its own journey. It is a provocative, complex and textural wine exuding the seductive spirit of “old world” Chardonnay. The vines have been managed to allow only dappled light into the fruiting zone. This promotes flavour development, low tannins, and bright levels of natural acidity. The fruit is sourced from the cool southern end of Margaret River. The tiny 100g Gin Gin clusters are hand harvested at first light to preserve freshness of fruit.

3. Cabernet Sauvignon: Structured Sophistication
-
Recommended Pick: Craiglee Cabernet Sauvignon Sunbury Victoria 2019
-
Tasting Notes: Cool with mint infusing the cassis and blackberries, wafts of tar and cedary oak. Ripe tannins and perky acidity work across a more medium-bodied palate where it is juicy and enticing. Allow more time for this to settle. It will. It’s good. 92 Points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion, Jun 2023
-
Why It Tastes Expensive: Craiglee of Victoria's Sunbury is one of Australia's leading cool-climate red wine producers in Australia. While their Shiraz rightfully gains plenty of attention, Craiglee Cabernet Sauvignon is consistently nothing short of spectacular.

4. Riesling: A Refreshing Delight
-
Recommended Pick: Wines by KT 'Peglidis Vineyard' Riesling 2022

-
Tasting Notes:
Top-rated 95 Points Halliday Wine Companion & Robert Parker Wine Advocate
From a dry-grown vineyard planted in 1973. Peglidis is a name that sits comfortably alongside those of top sites from anywhere in Clare Valley. This is precise and racy, scintillating even, so intense it's almost breathtaking in its piercing zing across the palate. Scents are lime on green apple, fragrant talc, frangipani and grapefruit pith, flavours similar with a rapier-like thrust through the mouth. Brilliant, crystalline expression with so much freshness and vitality on its side. This drinks with vigour and a high-refreshment factor now, but will mellow gracefully over a very, very long time. A top-quality marque! - Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion
-
Why It Tastes Expensive: Kerri Thompson is Australia’s Riesling queen, pushing winemaking to the edge with her experimental styles and laser-like focus on quality. She’s been making wine in South Australia’s Clare Valley for more than 20 years, founding her winery, Wines by KT, in 2006.

5. Grenache: The Hidden Gem
-
Recommended Pick: FERVOR 'Nuvo Movo' Grenache Great Southern 2024
-
Tasting Notes: This variety is ideally suited to this style with its vibrant “juicy” fruit aromas and sweet mid-palate weight. The almost non-existence of tannin means that you can comfortably chill this wine for a refreshing, but serious drink.
-
Why It Tastes Expensive: Made in a true Beaujolais style with 100% Whole Bunch fermentation (carbonic maceration) provides a lifted sweet berry perfume. The lack of manual maceration means that the entire flavour profile comes from the pure berry fruit characters of the Grenache. Fervor is a wine label from a father and son team based on opposite sides of the country - Mike and Callum Garland. Since 1996 Mike has been making cool climate wines in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. The aim with Fervor is to draw connections from all the great people we've met during our journey - have some fun and make some really great wines.
